Aug 18, 2018

NEW YORK — The Chicago Cubs tied a major league record by turning seven double plays Friday night, including a game-ending effort by rookie third baseman David Bote on a grounder by David Freese to finish off a 1-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cubs got six double plays on grounders — five with Cole Hamels pitching — and one on a line drive. The Elias Sports Bureau said the Cubs became the third team in big league history to turn seven DPs in a nine-inning game. Pittsburgh put runners on first and second in the ninth before Jesse...

Kolten Wong and Marcell Ozuna drove in two runs apiece, Flaherty pitched six shutout innings and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Brewers 5-2 on Friday night. "As the season goes on, whether you are facing a team for the first time or for the third time, there's adjustments made on both sides," Flaherty said. "Whoever I'm out there I'm pitching against, I'm pitching against." The Cardinals won for the ninth time in 10 games and pulled...

Desmond, Freeland pace Rockies' easy win over Braves

Aug 18, 2018

ATLANTA — Kyle Freeland commanded all four of his pitches and had his slider working especially well. It's been a smooth ride for the left-hander since mid-June. "I've been trying to hold that feeling and keep on going with that," Freeland said. "See how long I can ride it out." Ian Desmond tripled and drove in five runs, Freeland pitched six strong innings and the Colorado Rockies coasted to an 11-5 win over the Atlanta Braves on Friday night. The Rockies have won six of seven, and they're 28-14 since June 28, tops in the NL over that span. And...

Mauer pinch-hit homer helps Twins to 5-4 win over Tigers

Aug 18, 2018

MINNEAPOLIS — Joe Mauer disagreed with two called strikes by Laz Diaz and offered as much objection as the mild-mannered veteran will provide by looking back at the plate umpire following the second one that forced a full count. Mauer, pinch-hitting in the seventh inning, shook off the frustration and hit a go-ahead, three-run homer off reliever Louis Coleman, and the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 5-4 on Friday night. "That's about as professional an at-bat as you're going to see," Minnesota starter Kyle Gibson said. "That's Joe Mauer right there. He's a guy that gets a tough pitcher's...
