Trout stays hot, Angels hold on for 5-4 win over Arizona

Jun 20, 2018

ANAHEIM, Calif. — There is never a June gloom for Los Angeles Angels superstar Mike Trout. Trout drove in two runs, Kole Calhoun and Ian Kinsler added solo homers and the Angels held on for a 5-4 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night. Trout continued his torrid hitting in June by slapping a sharp first-pitch single to left-center with the bases loaded in the fifth inning, and a throwing error by Jarrod Dyson allowing Kinsler to score as the Angels took a 4-2 lead. "We have to be more than Mike, but believe me, that's a situation we...

Piscotty's homer ties it, Lowrie's homer wins it for A's

Jun 20, 2018

SAN DIEGO — The Oakland Athletics were down to their last strike when Stephen Piscotty hit a tying home run off closer Brad Hand, who was San Diego's only All-Star last year. Jed Lowie then hit a two-run shot with two outs in the 10th to lift the Athletics to a 4-2 victory Tuesday night. Hand was trying for his 22nd save when Piscotty drove a 2-2 fastball into the second deck, his fifth. "That's a guy you don't typically think you're going to string some hits together against and you're down to your last pitch and the next thing...

Posey, Hernandez hit home runs as Giants beat Marlins 6-3

Jun 20, 2018

SAN FRANCISCO — Buster Posey certainly thought he got hit by a pitch in retaliation. Manager Bruce Bochy is still disappointed the Marlins plunked Evan Longoria last week and the third baseman is now recovering from surgery on his left hand. Miami's Don Mattingly insists nobody on either side was intentionally hit and became upset that the umpires warned both teams too quickly. Posey homered in the first, Gorkys Hernandez hit a two-run drive in the second and an RBI double later, and the San Francisco Giants held their lead this time to beat the Marlins 6-3 on Tuesday in...

Surging Escobar sparks Twins past Sale, Red Sox in 6-2 win

Jun 20, 2018

MINNEAPOLIS — Eduardo Escobar, yet again, gave the Minnesota Twins the go-ahead hit. Two of them, of course. He's become a doubles machine. With a two-base hit that drove in two runs off Chris Sale in the sixth inning and another that launched a four-run eighth, Escobar led for the Twins to a 6-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night. "I don't know if he can keep up that kind of torrid pace, but we're seeing a guy who is supremely confident," Twins manager Paul Molitor said. Robby Scott (0-1), just recalled from Triple-A, relieved Sale to...

Houston's win streak ends at 12 games with 2-1 loss to Rays

Jun 20, 2018

HOUSTON — The Houston Astros relied on their powerful offense to win 12 straight games. On Tuesday night that offense went cold, and their streak ended with a 2-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. The Astros went 1 for 6 with runners in scoring position to come up one victory shy of setting the franchise record for longest winning streak in franchise history. After averaging more than seven runs in their last 12 games, Houston managed just five singles to end a stretch of 34 straight games with at least one extra-base hit. C.J. Cron homered early and Wilson...
